Nagaragawa River’s most upstream waterfall,
Meotodaki Waterfalls

Meotodaki is located along National Highway 156 leading to Hirugano Plateau, and downstream of Kamasudani Valley. The source of Nagaragawa River is deep in the mountains of Mt Dainichigatake, which is a few kilometers further back from here. Since the walking path is not maintained, it is the most upstream waterfall that you can easily visit is Meotodaki. If you walk about 5 minutes from the parking area, you can find a spring named Nagaragawa River headwater spring, and you can see the water slowly coming up.

Ferns grow densely in rocky areas. It is cool even in the summer. As you walk along the path by listening to the sound of water, you can see two waterfalls with a height of 17m. As the name Meotodaki suggests, the two waterfalls fall vertically in harmony with each other. It’s not dynamic at all, but the clear waterfall basin where the mist is covering the surroundings softly and gracefully. It is about 200m from the parking area to the basin. Just 10 minutes on foot from the national highway, you can experience the great outdoors with plenty of negative ions. It is a truly unexplored region with excellent access. Many people visit every year to enjoy the beautiful autumn leaves in autumn, seeking forest bathing and coolness in spring and summer. The path to the waterfall is a little narrow but gentle. Please feel free to visit these beautiful waterfalls when you come to Gujo.
